phoebe_halliwellTrust was one of those ideas that had become difficult for Phoebe to think about these days. At one point in her life, in a time that now seems so long ago, she would have trusted just about anybody that came into her life. In many cases she did, and ended it up hurt because of it.
Then the attic mysteriously opened itself and she discovered the Book Of Shadows.
Suddenly, who she trusted became a matter of life or death to her and her sisters.
Those early days were hard because she still trusted and believed that there was good in everybody. She wanted to believe that there was good in everybody she came into contact with. She still got hurt, still got broken. The broken pieces she hid deep within herself and continued to be perky and happy Phoebe.
For the longest time, she trusted Piper and Prue and that was all. Then Leo and Darryl. Darryl was only the second human to know what the girls were. He was like their big brother and once yelled at Leo for trying to protect him when the sisters were in trouble.
Then she met him.
Cole Turner. Assistant District Attorney. Half Demon. Assassin sent to destroy the Charmed Ones.
She fell for him. Fell for him hard. And even after she learned he was half-demon, she still loved him---and hid the truth from her sisters. She loved him and he loved her. He was trying to change, to be good. Then he killed a witch and Phoebe lost her belief in him...for a time. But he loved her and convinced her that he loved her---saving them both from a fate that was worse than death at the time.
And so she believed. And she trusted.
She trusted in him...in their love.
When all Hell broke loose and Prue died...Cole was there for her like Leo was there for Piper. Cole understood her need to find and kill the demon that had killed her sister. He didn't let her go alone, risked his life for her. He became a target of assassins because of his love for her. Cole had defied hell for her, and she trusted in him.
But it didn't last.
Something went wrong when they originally vanquished the Source and he somehow took Cole over. She still wasn't very clear on how that had happened. Even then, she loved him. She had taken his hand and become his Queen. She turned away from her sisters and married Cole. But she couldn't turn away from who she was...even after she became pregnant with Cole's child.
She was still a Charmed One inside her heart and she defied the underworld and hell to protect an innocent. That was when everything shattered around her.
She learned that the Seer had been giving her a tonic of pure evil to erase her goodness---and that Cole had known about it. She might have forgiven that. She could have forgiven that.
But then, Cole killed an innocent. In particular, he killed the innocent that she had earlier helped Piper and Paige protect. Piper and Paige came to their penthouse to kill him, but they weren't strong enough. She was hysterical, in the restroom, trying to decide what to do.
She had to choose between his life or the lives of her sisters.
She hated doing it. It tore her apart inside. But she took the final crystal and placed it in the circle. Piper and Paige had to hold her up as they vanquished the Source once more. When the Source was destroyed, Cole disappeared.
She cried for days, sometimes she still does when she looks at the pictures of the two of them.
She had been trusted to make a decision...and she had. And, she still trusted that Cole had truly loved her.
But sometimes, trust was a painful thing.
